Learn Azure in five stages: 1) IT and cloud basics, 2) Azure fundamentals, 3) core Azure admin skills, 4) one career track (administration, DevOps, data engineering or AI), and 5) projects and job preparation. Practise in the Azure portal every week and don’t move to the next stage until you pass its checkpoint. At one to two hours a day, most beginners finish in about six months.

The Azure roadmap at a glance
Five stages, about six months. Each stage builds on the one before it — that’s why the order matters.

⏳ Weeks assume one to two hours of study a day. Going slower is fine — skipping a stage is not.
Stage 1: IT and cloud basics
Azure runs on servers, networks and operating systems. Skip this and every later Azure service feels confusing.
• Install VirtualBox and set up one Windows and one Ubuntu virtual machine
• Use the Linux terminal for 20 minutes every day
• Run ping and nslookup and explain what you see
✅ Checkpoint: you can explain what a server, an IP address and DNS are, and move around Linux from the terminal.
Stage 2: Azure fundamentals
Now you learn how Azure is organised and how it charges you. This is also what the optional AZ-900 exam covers.
• Create a free Azure account and set a budget alert first
• Create a resource group and a storage account, then delete them
• Estimate a small setup in the Azure Pricing Calculator
✅ Checkpoint: you can explain subscriptions, resource groups and regions, and you know how to stop a resource from costing money.
Stage 3: Core Azure admin skills
This is the hands-on base every Azure job uses — and the skills tested in AZ-104, the Azure Administrator exam.
• Build a VNet with two subnets and a VM in each, then control traffic with an NSG
• Give a test user Reader access to one resource group only
• Create an alert that emails you when a VM’s CPU goes above 80%
✅ Checkpoint: you can deploy, secure and monitor a small two-VM setup from the portal and from Azure CLI. Test yourself with our Azure interview questions.

Usually after one to two years in Azure admin or ITCan’t decide? Quick guide
Like running and fixing systems → Admin
Like automating releases → DevOps
Like SQL and data → Data
Like building smart apps → AI
• Admin: automate VM start/stop with Azure CLI and set up Azure Backup
• DevOps: build a pipeline that deploys a web app to App Service on every Git push
• Data: copy a CSV from Blob storage into a table with Azure Data Factory
• AI: build a small chat app with Azure OpenAI
✅ Checkpoint: you’ve completed at least three end-to-end labs in your track and can explain each one in your own words. See the Azure certification roadmap for the exam that fits your track.
Stage 5: Projects and job preparation
Skills you can’t show don’t count in an interview. This stage turns what you learned into proof.
• Admin: a secure two-tier app (web + database) with monitoring and backup
• DevOps: a CI/CD pipeline with infrastructure as code and approvals
• Data: an end-to-end pipeline from source to a Power BI report
✅ Checkpoint: you can walk an interviewer through each project in about five minutes. Practise with our Azure interview questions.

How to study each week
A simple weekly rhythm beats occasional all-night sessions. Here’s what works for most of our learners.
Learn + lab
One to two hours a day: one topic, then one hands-on lab in the Azure portal.
Write it up
Turn the week’s labs into short notes or a post on GitHub or LinkedIn.
Revise and rest
Review the week, test yourself against the stage checkpoint, then switch off.
Mistakes that slow beginners down
Almost everyone who gets stuck made one of these. Avoid them and you’ll move much faster.
✕ Jumping to advanced services without cloud basics
✕ Skipping networking because it feels boring
✕ Only watching videos without doing labs
✕ Forgetting to delete resources and getting a surprise bill
✕ Learning every track at the same time
✕ No projects, notes or GitHub to show employers

Frequently asked questions
What is the best Azure roadmap for beginners?
Start with IT and cloud basics, then Azure fundamentals, then core admin skills like VMs, networking, storage and identity. After that, choose one track (admin, DevOps, data, AI or security) and finish with projects and job preparation.
How long does it take to learn Azure from zero?
At one to two hours a day, most beginners complete this roadmap in about six months. It can be faster if you already know IT or networking.
Do I need coding to learn Azure?
Not for the basics or the admin track. Basic scripting with Azure CLI or PowerShell helps a lot. DevOps, data and AI tracks need more coding.
Should I take AZ-900 first?
AZ-900 is optional. It is a good confidence boost for complete beginners, but many learners go directly to AZ-104 after building hands-on skills.
Which Azure track is best for freshers?
Azure Administrator is the most common entry track because every other track builds on it. Choose data or DevOps if you already enjoy SQL or coding.
Can I learn Azure for free?
Yes. Microsoft Learn is free, and the Azure free account gives new users credit and always-free services to practise with.
